"Oehlschlager Daily News"

Sometimes, Matt answers our house telephone, “Hoberg Daily News! How may I help you?”
Most of the time, I roll my eyes and get on to the matter of why I am calling, but recently, Matt’s salutation has got me thinking. I’ve started to think about the newspaper and its significance in history.
Birthday season began last month and with it, like always, I am beginning to realize that everybody was right.
This time in my life when the kids are little DOES goes by in a blink of an eye.

When you’re in the midst of it (especially in the beginning), you do a mental eye roll and shake off the statement.
“‘Blink of an eye?’ Yeah right!”
But today, even when I concentrate, I cannot fathom or understand how fast the last eight years have gone. And, unfortunately, all those little things that you cannot ever imagine forgetting have slipped away.
Life is like that. We all forget things. That’s is exactly why I love to look at all the old bound issues of the newspaper. No pun intended, but the newspaper is such a record of our history. A history of our town that really doesn’t exist anywhere else except for our memories. And you know how memories are.
So in light of how fast life is and how selective my memories are, I am going to transform my column into my own little newspaper.
I interviewed some of the most important people in my life, and what they said is not necessarily super entertaining or important but it will be in print.
My hope is that years from now when I again am lamenting the speed of life, I can read these interviews and travel back to that pit stop in 2011 when Kadence was almost 8, Rylan had just turned 6, Bella was 4 (soon to be 5) and Masen was just a few months shy of 4.
Without further delay...
The Oehlschlager Daily News
KADENCE ANNE, 7
What is your favorite thing to do in the whole world? Draw and write because it makes me feel good.
What is your favorite and least favorite food? Burritos and pizza. (Least) Macaroni and cheese and Ramen noodles and turkey sandwiches. (Can you believe there’s a child on the planet that doesn’t like mac and cheese? I couldn’t either!)
What do you want to be when you grow up? A newspaper writer because you get to write a lot.
RYLAN MATTHEW, 6
What is your favorite thing to do in the whole world? Play outside and play Mario.
What is your favorite and least favorite food? Spaghetti and Ramen noodles. (Least favorite) I like everything, Mom. Actually, I do not like, uhhh, it’s called beef jerky. It tastes yuck to me.
What do you want to be when you grow up? Someone who hauls cattle to other people’s houses. (The first time we ever talked about his future, he told me he wanted to grow up to be retired. Poor guy, I hated to burst his bubble.)
BELLA ROSE, 4
What is your favorite thing to do in the whole world? Play. I like to play school and house. (In every scenario, there are always family members and their “heroes.” My kids have adopted the cousins, Coach, Timmie and Earl as characters in their games.)
What is your favorite and least favorite food? Sandwiches. Cheese sandwiches. (Least favorite) Broccoli. (Why?) Because!
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a mom with a car and five kids. Actually, I want two kids and a baby.
MASEN TIMOTHY, 3
(Masen’s answers are in caps because his talk is almost always the average person’s yell. He is VERY demonstrative.)
What is your favorite thing to do in the whole world?
MOW THE YARD AND PLAY FOOTBALL!!! YEAH!
What is your favorite and least favorite food?
Peanut butter and jelly. (He eats his sandwiches separately. He will eat the slice of peanut butter bread first and then the slice with jelly.)
What do you want to be when you grow up?
A dad and nothing else.
The end.
